Updated: Oct 6, 2023

I have worked with many different human and equine clients. Each is unique but there are some common issues that pop up. Below is a list of common behavioural issues that come up when there is an underlying physical problem.

Assessing your horses to determine if a behavioral issue is related to a musculoskeletal problem.

  • Shortened stride

  • Repeated weight shifting, non weight bearing

  • Kicking at abdomen

  • Pawing

  • Reluctance/refusal to jump

  • Frequent unusual head movements

  • Resistance or defensive when touched

  • Tail deviation and excessive swishing

  • Resistant to perform certain movements (e.g.right bend)

  • Pain related issues when asking for a transition

  • Pain related issues when tacking up or grooming

  • Unexplained behavioural changes

  • Bucking and rearing

  • Bolting

  • Lameness

  • Stiffness

  • Muscle soreness

  • Joint soreness

Often these issues stem from the following causes.

  • Riding issues

  • Post-traumatic injuries

  • Developmental issues

  • Conformation issues

  • Age-related issues

Any of the above may indicate the need for assessment. Once underlying issue has been targeted we can move forward with mobilization, healing and prevention.
